Coming Up for Air...

My blog posts are becoming feast or famine. I'll post a lot and then silence...

Life has been busy around our home. I started a healthy lifestyle change, a.k.a diet. That's not going to so well. Not only have I been cranky but I think I've actually gained weight. So, I went to the doctor. I was convinced it was my thyroid. She laughed. I wasn't trying to be funny. For some reason or other people find me quite humorous when I'm being serious and serious when I'm trying to be funny. I need to work on my delivery.

Apparently, it's a thing here in Miami that women who are having trouble losing weight or have gained some weight think it's their thyroid since my doctor told me she had 10 other people in the same day complain about the same exact thing. To humor me, she is going to run tests but she says that the reality is that as we age our metabolism slows down and those 10 lbs take a lot more work to come off than they did a few years ago.

This was not what I wanted to hear. First of all, this was the 2nd health professional in a week to tell me "for my age" I was doing great and that "for my age" I will have to do...

So, I have to work out and eat right. I know. That is a shocker to everyone reading. I know that no body has heard of this type of advice before. And the worst part about it was that she told I would have to work out hard and often. Why not just put a pastelito de queso y guayaba in my mouth and call it a day? So I left pretty discouraged.

I do have a gym membership. I also have a gym down the hall from me at work. I could go to the gym after work and leave my son at the daycare until 6:30, so that he'll have dinner at 7:30 so that he'll get to sleep at 10PM. But I won't do that. I could go to the gym in the morning and drop him off at daycare at 7:30AM, so that I can get a morning work out, take a shower and start work nice and fresh. But I won't do that. I'm not going to compromise the only time we have together so that I can go work out.

So, I have to come up with something more creative since walking him every evening is not cutting it. I will think of something because being healthy is a priority. Ah, the balancing act of a single mom, who apparently is doing really well for someone my age. (Now that is another topic!!)
At church last Sunday. He spotted the ball and then went for it. No, we don't go to church and spend the afternoon playing outside. We get to church early, have lunch and then play before service.
This morning, we headed out to the kiddie barbershop to get Alberto a haircut. He was due! He was really good today. He actually sat in the car/chair by himself and let Edmundo cut his hair.

We went to the park a little later. He was sporting his new hair and looking good!

Alberto is getting SO big Ana! He is just looking like a little man!

I hear ya on the weight loss. I keep thinking, "Oh, next week I gotta work on my diet and exercise." Needless to say, next week never comes. I would have to get up at 4:00am every day in order to get a workout in and frankly, by the time Kate is in bed I am exhausted and have to clean up around the house. So if you come up with any solutions feel free to share!

OK, Ana and friends. You are absolutely wonderful to not compromise your time with your kiddos to work out. But remember, your health is soooooo important. If you aren't healthy, who will be there to take care of your precious children? So while it is a pain, it's a necessity.

I can't imagine what it must be like as a single mom. But as a mom of three with a hubby who works insane hours, it's a challenge here, too. I've had to get creative many times to fit my work out in.

So here are my suggestions:

Get the Jillian Michael's 30-day shred DVD. It's 20 minute workouts, and it will kick your butt. You can do it at home, first thing in the morning and get in the shower before you ever leave for daycare.

Go to the gym on Saturday and Sunday. Take Alberto with you or make that special time with a beloved aunt or grandparent. 45 minutes is all you need, and you won't need to get all fresh for work.

During your walks, do interval training (bursts of sprints with walking). You will burn a ton more calories that way. I do almost all walking for my cardio and it is "cutting it." You just have to push yourself really hard.

Buy some handweights you can use at home. Cheap at Target or Walmart. I don't have a gym membership, and I work out with weights all the time.

Walk during your lunch. Eat for 30 minutes and walk for 30 minutes.

You can do this. I know you can. Don't give up or get discouraged. I'm here for you cheering you on!

"Go Ana, Go Ana, Go Ana, Go Ana!"

See?
